Quantity Surveying, Billing and BBS Course: What to Learn and What to Ask
Every construction project runs on numbers: how much of each material is needed, what the work should cost, and how much the contractor is entitled to be paid at each stage. The person who handles those numbers is the quantity surveyor, or the billing engineer on the contractor side. It is steady, well-understood work, and it is one of the more accessible ways for a civil engineer or diploma holder to move into the commercial side of construction. This guide explains what quantity surveying, billing and bar bending schedule (BBS) skills involve, what a good course should cover, and what to check before you pay.
What a Quantity Surveyor and Billing Engineer Actually Do
The work falls into a few connected parts:
- Quantity take-off and estimation. Measuring quantities from drawings, such as earthwork, concrete, masonry, plaster and flooring, and turning them into a cost estimate.
- Rate analysis and the bill of quantities (BOQ). Working out the rate for each item from materials, labour and equipment, and arranging the items into the document that a tender is priced against.
- Billing. Preparing running bills during the project and the final bill at the end, based on work actually measured on site and checked against the contract.
- Bar bending schedules (BBS). Listing every reinforcement bar by shape, diameter, length and quantity, so that steel can be cut, bent, ordered and billed accurately. Steel is one of the largest cost items in concrete work, so errors here are expensive.
- Cost control. Comparing what was planned with what was spent and measured, and flagging overruns early.
These skills sit between site engineering and project management. Someone who can measure accurately and bill correctly is useful to a contractor, a consultant and a client alike.
What a Good Course Should Cover
Look for a syllabus that works through real measurement and real documents, not just definitions:
- Reading drawings and taking off quantities for common building items
- Rate analysis for the main items of work
- Preparing a BOQ from a set of drawings
- Preparing running and final bills, and how measurements are recorded and checked
- Bar bending schedules, including cutting lengths and steel weights
- Reconciliation of materials such as steel and cement against what was billed
- Practice on a full project, not isolated items
Software helps with speed, but the underlying skill is understanding what is being measured and why.
Who Should Take It
- Civil engineers and diploma holders who want to move into estimation, QS or billing roles
- Site engineers who want to understand the commercial side of their own work
- Contractor staff who prepare running bills and reconcile materials
- Fresh graduates who want a practical skill that employers look for
No prior QS experience is required for a beginner course.
A Real Course to Compare
Protrainy lists a course called Billing Estimation BBS Combo, which appears in the page's title bar as the "5-in-1 Certification Bundle". Its stated outcomes include preparing accurate quantity and cost estimates, efficient billing processes for construction projects, project cost control and budget management, and a certificate validating QS estimation and billing skills. The course is organised across 19 lectures.
It is instructor-led and taught in Hinglish, listed at Rs 15,998 and currently available at 50% off for Rs 7,999, and rated 4.9 out of 5. The page was last updated in November 2025.
There are several things to ask before enrolling:
- What are the five subjects? The page calls it a "5-in-1" bundle but does not say what the five are, and the on-page name is "Billing Estimation BBS Combo".
- What is in each of the 19 lectures? The page shows the lecture numbers but not their titles.
- How many hours does it run? The site's course data shows a duration figure of 50, with no unit given.
- Is there placement support? The page does not mention it.
For the software side of estimating, see our guides to what CostX is and what to expect from a CostX training course.
What to Check Before You Enroll in Any QS Course
- A full syllabus with hours, not just a title
- Whether it includes real BOQ preparation and bill preparation exercises
- Whether BBS is taught with actual cutting-length and weight calculations
- Whether it is instructor-led so you can ask about your own site measurements
- What the certificate certifies
Next Step
If you want practical quantity surveying, estimation and billing skills, see the details for Protrainy's Billing Estimation BBS Combo course and ask for the full lecture list and the names of the five subjects before you enroll. For any question, write to support@protrainy.com.
