Design Engineer Certification: ETABS, STAAD Pro, Civil 3D, OpenRoads and IIT Pave in One Program
Most design engineers in India end up needing more than one software package. A structural engineer who starts on buildings gets asked about a bridge or an industrial shed. A highway engineer is handed a pavement design. A diploma holder moving into design wants a credible set of skills quickly, without buying five separate courses. This guide explains what each of the five tools in a design engineer program does, who actually needs all five, and how to judge the price of a bundle against buying the courses one by one.
What Each Tool Does
ETABS is structural analysis and design software built for buildings. It is generally the preferred choice for multi-storey and high-rise building analysis because its workflow is organised around floors, shear walls and building loads.
STAAD Pro covers a wider range of structures, including industrial structures, bridges, towers and steel frames. Many structural engineers use it alongside ETABS rather than instead of it.
Civil 3D is Autodesk's tool for survey processing, alignments, profiles and corridor design. It turns survey data into a road or site model.
OpenRoads Designer is Bentley's equivalent for road and highway work, often preferred on large infrastructure projects and by clients who standardise on Bentley.
IIT Pave is used to design flexible pavements based on traffic loading, material properties and the design life required, in line with IRC guidance. Alignment and corridor tools give you the road shape. Pavement design tells you what the road is built from.
The pairings matter. ETABS and STAAD Pro are two views of structural design. Civil 3D and OpenRoads are two views of road design. IIT Pave sits on top of road design.
Who Actually Needs All Five
Not everyone does. A building-only structural engineer may never touch a highway tool, and a highway engineer may rarely need ETABS. The real case for a five-tool program is:
- Early-career engineers who do not yet know which direction their first job will take
- Diploma holders and graduates who want to move from drafting into design roles
- Engineers at consultancies and EPC firms that handle both buildings and infrastructure
- People who want to keep options open across structural and transportation work
If you already know you work only on buildings, or only on roads, a smaller course will usually serve you better.
Why Manual Design Is Part of It
A software package gives you numbers. It does not tell you whether they are reasonable. Programs that teach manual design alongside software, as the ETABS part of this one does, produce engineers who can check the output instead of trusting it. That judgement is what separates a designer from a software operator.
A Real Program to Compare
Protrainy's Design Engineer Certification Program bundles ETABS with manual design, STAAD Pro, Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoad Designer and IIT Pave. According to its page, the content covers structural analysis and design, RCC design, seismic and wind analysis, highway geometric design, corridor modelling, pavement design, quantity estimation and BIM-enabled infrastructure workflows, taught through live instructor-led classes, real projects, practical assignments and recorded sessions for revision.
It is taught in Hinglish, listed at Rs 9,000 and currently available at 50% off for Rs 4,500, and rated 4.8 out of 5 by 250 students. The page was last updated in July 2026.
How the Price Compares
Protrainy also sells these as separate courses. At current prices, ETABS and Manual Design is Rs 1,000, STAAD Pro is Rs 999, Civil 3D and IIT Pave is Rs 4,999, and OpenRoads is Rs 3,000. Bought separately that is Rs 9,998. The bundle at Rs 4,500 saves Rs 5,498, which is about 55 percent. That is a substantial saving, much larger than a typical bundle discount.
If you want to compare the pieces before buying, read our guides to the ETABS course, the STAAD Pro course, the Civil 3D course and the OpenRoads course.
What to Ask Before You Enroll
- Where is IIT Pave taught? The separate Civil 3D and IIT Pave course lists only Civil 3D topics in its lectures. The bundle page lists IIT Pave as one of its five tools, so ask for the session plan.
- How many hours per tool? The site's course data shows a duration figure of 120 for the bundle against 21 to 25 for each single course. The unit is not shown on the page, so ask what it means.
- Is the schedule realistic for five tools? Ask how long the program runs and how the live classes are spread.
- Do you get recordings? The page says recorded sessions are provided for revision.
- Is there placement support? The page names the kinds of roles it targets but does not promise placement.
- What does the certificate certify?
Next Step
If you want a broad design skill set across structure and transportation at a single price, see the details for Protrainy's Design Engineer Certification Program and ask for the session plan before you enroll. For any question, write to support@protrainy.com.
