Building Planning Combo: Primavera P6 and MS Project for Construction Planners
Construction planning is one of the better-paid specialisms open to a site or project engineer, and nearly every job description in it names either Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or both. If you work on buildings, the question is whether to learn one tool, learn both in separate courses, or take a combined program. This guide explains how the two tools are used on building projects, when a combo makes sense, and how to read the price difference honestly.
How Planners Use the Two Tools on Building Projects
On a typical building project:
- Primavera P6 tends to hold the master programme, especially on larger developments and for clients or main contractors who want detailed resource loading, baselines and progress control.
- Microsoft Project is common for smaller buildings, sub-contractor and package schedules, and day-to-day updates, because it is familiar and quick to set up.
- Planners are expected to move between them, reading a schedule received in one tool and reporting in the other.
The underlying skills are the same in both: breaking a building into a work breakdown structure, linking activities, finding the critical path, loading resources, setting a baseline and tracking progress. That shared foundation is why learning the second tool is much faster than learning the first.
What a Construction Planning Course Should Cover
- Work breakdown structure for a building: sub-structure, structure, finishes, services, external works
- Activity logic, durations and calendars
- The critical path and what drives the finish date
- Resource allocation and levelling
- Cost estimation, budgeting and expense tracking
- Risk identification and tracking
- Progress updates against a baseline and performance reporting
A course for buildings should use building examples, with repeating floors and overlapping finishing trades, not a generic exercise.
When a Combo Is Worth Considering
A combo suits you if you are building a planning career and do not yet know which tool your next employer will use, or if you move between clients and contractors. If your company already standardises on one tool, a single course may be enough for now, and you can add the second later.
A Real Combo to Compare
Protrainy's Building Planning Combo course covers Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project for construction. The course page describes live classes, real projects and interactive sessions, and lists outcomes including project planning and scheduling, resource management, risk analysis, cost control and budgeting, tracking progress and timely delivery, and performance reporting. The FAQ notes no prior Primavera knowledge is required.
It is instructor-led and taught in Hinglish, listed at Rs 29,998 and currently available at 50% off for Rs 14,999, and rated 4.8 out of 5. A certificate of completion is awarded. The page was last updated in October 2026.
Reading the Price Fairly
Protrainy also sells a Primavera Building course on its own, currently Rs 8,499. Our guide to the Primavera course for building construction explains what that one covers. The combo is Rs 14,999, so the extra Rs 6,500 buys the Microsoft Project part and whatever additional content the combo includes. There is no separate Microsoft Project course for buildings to compare against, so it is not possible to calculate a bundle saving. Treat the combo as a way to get both tools in one program, and decide by whether you need both.
One thing to check: part of the combo page's benefits list reads like general Microsoft Project feature descriptions, such as integration with Teams, Excel and SharePoint, rather than course content. Ask the provider for the actual syllabus and the hours given to each tool.
What to Check Before You Enroll
- A full syllabus, with hours split between the two tools
- Whether the examples are real building projects
- Whether recordings are provided for missed live classes
- Whether any placement support is offered, since the page does not mention it
- What the certificate certifies
Next Step
