Surveying and GIS Course: Levelling, Total Station, GNSS and QGIS
Surveying and GIS Course: Levelling, Total Station, GNSS and QGIS
Every construction project starts with measurement. Before a road is designed, a building is set out or a pipeline is routed, someone has to measure the ground accurately. Surveying has changed a great deal: the dumpy level and chain are now joined by total stations, GNSS rovers and drones, and the data ends up in GIS software. This guide explains what a surveying and GIS course should teach, in the order the work actually happens, and how to judge whether a course covers the modern toolset or only the classroom basics.
Surveying and GIS: How They Fit Together
Surveying is the field half: measuring distances, heights and positions on the ground. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is the data half: storing, analysing and mapping that spatial information. A surveyor collects points, and a GIS turns them into maps and layers that planners and engineers can use. On infrastructure, urban planning and environmental projects, you increasingly need both skills.
What a Complete Course Should Cover
Surveying Fundamentals
What surveying is, its classifications and primary divisions, the fundamental principles, objects and uses of surveying, and how maps and plans are made. This is the vocabulary the rest builds on.
Measurement and Levelling
Instruments for linear measurement, then levelling in depth: classification of levelling, the height of instrument method, the rise and fall method, profile levelling for L-sections, reciprocal levelling, and curvature and refraction corrections. Levelling is central to roads, drainage and earthwork, and the common errors in it are worth learning early.
Contours
Characteristics and uses of contour lines, which turn height data into a readable picture of the terrain.
Field Practice
Keeping a field measurement book, the intersection method, and field sketches drawn in AutoCAD.
Total Station
How a total station works, with a video demonstration, and practical uses such as setting out column marking on site.
GNSS and DGPS
Modern positioning: GNSS rover surveying, real-time kinematic and static methods, base and rover set-ups, stake-out of lines and points, and DGPS survey methods.
Drone Surveying
Planning flight locations and performing a drone survey, which has become a fast way to cover large sites.
GIS and QGIS
Spatial data models, vector and raster data, GIS process and applications, and an introduction to QGIS, including how to install it and what it is used for. Generating a map in Google Earth is also covered.
A course that stops at levelling and a total station is teaching surveying as it was twenty years ago. One that adds GNSS, drones and GIS prepares you for how projects are mapped today.
Who Should Take It
- Civil engineering students and fresh graduates who want practical fieldwork knowledge
- Site engineers who set out structures and check levels
- Professionals in urban planning, geography and environmental work who need spatial data skills
- Anyone moving into land, infrastructure or geospatial roles
Familiarity with basic geography or mapping helps, but no prior experience is required.
A Real Course to Compare
Protrainy's Surveying and GIS course runs across 18 lectures that follow this sequence, from fundamentals and levelling through total station, GNSS rover, drone surveying and QGIS.
It is instructor-led and taught in Hindi, listed at Rs 1,998 and currently available at 50% off for Rs 999, and rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1,300 students. A certificate of completion is awarded. The page does not mention placement assistance.
One thing to check: the course FAQ says the GIS software used is "ArcGIS or QGIS", but the lecture list names only QGIS. If you need ArcGIS specifically, ask the provider.
What to Check Before You Enroll
- Does it cover GNSS and a total station, not only levelling?
- Is there hands-on or demonstration content, not slides alone?
- Which GIS software is taught, and is it free for you to use?
- Is it instructor-led so you can ask about your own site data?
- What does the certificate certify?
